Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Sixty Sunshine Coast multicultural jobseekers will be better equipped for the workforce after accessing work placements, job preparation programs and accredited training thanks to Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative funding.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the EMERGE project run by Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre will receive State Government funding to once again assist local jobseekers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
“The $508,850 grant from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will assist participants to gain job skills and experience for working in an Australian workplace,” Mr Mickel said.
“This project has had great success over the past couple of years and continues to be essential as the multicultural population of the Sunshine Coast increases.
“Queensland is experiencing a record low unemployment rate of 3.8 per cent but there are still people, particularly those from non English speaking backgrounds, who find it difficult to enter the Australian workforce.
“Projects like EMERGE assist participants with tools to improve their language and job skills so they can secure meaningful employment.”
Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre Manager Michael Henning said participants will learn about Australian workplace culture, specialist language, literacy and numeracy skills.
“Some participants will be able to access more than one assistance tool depending on their needs,” Mr Henning said.
“Forty job preparation participants will receive skill development in job search, communication skills, conflict resolution, goal setting, career planning and other life skills.
“Thirty participants will be paid to work full-time for 16 weeks with local employers engaged in administrative work.
“Host employers will include the Maroochy Shire Council, Caloundra City Council, Sunshine Coast Environment Centre, Diversicare, Education Queensland, Caloundra Library, Maroochy Waterwatch, Queensland Police Service and the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry.
“And 50 participants will also have the opportunity to complete accredited training in basic computing at Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE.”
During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.
Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
