Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

INFOLINE TO BOOST WORKPLACE FAIRNESS AND SAFETY FOR MIGRANTS

A new infoline has been opened to help the state’s growing Sudanese community access workplace health and safety and industrial relations information from the Queensland Government.

Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel said the service mirrored a program operating between the department and Brisbane’s Vietnamese community.

“That program has been a great success in encouraging Vietnamese workers to work with the department in cracking down on unsafe workplaces and in ensuring their rights at the workplace are upheld,” he said.

“The new service, which will feature an infoline staffed by a Department of Employment and Industrial relations officer who also is a Sudanese speaker, will put workers and their families in touch with expert advice on industrial matters and workplace health and safety.

“Members of the community can call the infoline and be put through to the relevant experts. This service is in addition to the information contained on the department’s website and other phone advisory services.”

Mr Mickel said the Government was a keen supporter of not only fair and safe workplaces, but workplaces which reflected the makeup of Queensland’s increasingly diverse community.

“That’s why it is important that we constantly improve access to our services for the community at large as it evolves and grows,” he said.

“Workers and their families can simply ring the infoline on (07) 3872 0512 and get directed to advice on pay rates and conditions, rights and obligations of employees and employers or information on workplace health and safety issues.”
