Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Australia Zoo and Warner Village Theme Parks CEO John Menzies were honoured at the prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards 2007 presented by Queensland Airports Limited in Townsville this evening, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said.
Australia Zoo, on the Sunshine Coast, won the major tourism attraction award and Mr Menzies was presented with the Marie Watson-Blake Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Individual.
“Australia Zoo has become an iconic attraction that has always looked to the future by incorporating new attractions,” she said.
“I warmly congratulate Terri Irwin and her team. It’s a popular winner and an inspiration to everyone in the industry.
“John Menzies was an excellent choice for the outstanding individual award.
“John has worked his way up the ranks from his early days as a performance water skier to building up Seaworld to a world-class attraction, helping to develop Hamilton Island and overseeing the inception of Warner Brothers Movieworld.
“John has made an amazing contribution to the Queensland tourism industry.”
Ms Boyle said Far North Queensland netted the highest number of awards, winning six of the 26 categories.
“Closely following were Townsville and the Gold Coast regions, each with five awards.
“There were two new entrants to the Hall of Fame with both the Sunshine Coast’s Spirit House Restaurant and Cooking School and the Gab Titui Cultural Centre in the Torres Strait winning their categories for the third year in a row.
“Competition was particularly strong at this year’s Queensland Tourism Awards, with more than 200 entries received.
“The Queensland Tourism Awards showcase the best of Queensland tourism. All winners and finalists are to be congratulated on their outstanding achievements.”
Ms Boyle congratulated Tourism Queensland and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) for organising and staging the Queensland Tourism Awards at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
“Thank you to the awards’ principal partner, Queensland Airports Limited for its generous support in presenting the Queensland Tourism Awards 2007,” she said.
QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said the 13-member judging panel had a difficult task selecting winners and finalists in this year’s awards.
“The standards were high and competition was fierce which reveals the maturity and professionalism of Queensland’s tourism industry,” he said.
All Queensland Tourism Awards winners will progress to the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards to be presented in Canberra on Friday 29 February 2008.
