Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Seven athletes from the Queensland Academy of Sport are among over 50 nominees being recognised at the 2007 Queensland Sportswoman of the Year Awards.
Sport Minister Judy Spence said the awards, coordinated by Womensport Queensland, provide an excellent opportunity to recognise the achievements of Queensland’s top female sporting heroes.
“Our female athletes receiving awards tonight are an inspiration to all women and girls in this state, around Australia and internationally,” Ms Spence said.
“The Queensland Government is a proud sponsor of the Queensland Sportswoman of the Year Awards, providing $22 500 in funding.
“Tonight is our chance to congratulate Queensland’s highest achievers in women’s sport – and to encourage our up and coming female sports stars to continue to reach for their goals.
“In Queensland we have an impressive group of elite female athletes, who are achieving great things on the national and international sporting stage.
“Tonight’s award nominees have represented the state or country in a wide range of sports, including football, water polo, swimming, cricket, softball, squash, rowing and hockey.
“Their achievements set an excellent example to younger female athletes who are hoping to achieve sporting success in the future.”
Ms Spence said the Bligh Government is committed to supporting female sport in Queensland, and to addressing the lack of physical activity among women and girls.
“It is an alarming statistic that 48 percent of women are not being active enough to receive health benefits,” Ms Spence said.
“Less than one in fifteen girls meet the required physical activity of at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
“This is an issue we are committed to addressing.
“Since 1998, the state government has spent around $11 million developing opportunities for women and girls to get active, delivering new programs and upgrading facilities for female dominated sports such as netball and softball.
“We will continue to support projects, organisations and individuals who are involved in female sport in this state – so we can continue to deliver better sport and recreation opportunities for all women and girls.
15 female athletes will receive awards at the 15th Annual Awards at the Sofitel in Brisbane tonight, which will include the announcement of the Queensland Sportswoman of the Year.
