The Honourable Robert Schwarten
The $2.4 million refurbishment of the ANZAC Square Shrine of Remembrance has been completed in time for Sunday’s Remembrance Day commemorations in Brisbane.
Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten said QBuild added the finishing touches to the shrine’s restoration this week, completing a three year project.
“The historic ANZAC Square Shrine of Remembrance holds a special place in the hearts of all Queenslanders, and it’s great the restoration of the memorial’s badly-weathered stonework has now been completed,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The project has been managed from start to finish by QBuild whose skilled staff, including stonemasons, have done a great job in restoring the shrine to its former glory.”
The shrine was originally dedicated on Remembrance Day in November 1930.
“The restoration work included waterproofing, sub-soil drainage, concrete and structural steel repairs, and terrazzo and stone repairs and replacement,” Mr Schwarten said.
“The final stage proved to be a very delicate procedure involving the reinstatement and, where necessary, replacement of small glass mosaic tiles surrounding the Eternal Flame.
“It was a challenge because QBuild’s stonemasons had to source authentic replacement glass mosaic tiles but QBuild was up to the task and have delivered a fantastic outcome for all Queenslanders to enjoy,” Mr Schwarten said.
“These fine tradespeople have done a great job in ensuring this important memorial is preserved in first-class condition for future generations."
RSL (Qld Branch) Chief Executive Officer Chris McHugh said: “QBuild has done an outstanding job with the ANZAC Square restorations, from extensive research to environmental considerations, all the while mindful of the heritage protection of the site.
“ANZAC Square has become the commemorative centre for Queenslanders who have built memories of the fallen through its memorials and statues.
“The Shrine of Remembrance at ANZAC Square will remain an integral part of Queensland’s commemoration efforts now and into the future,” Mr McHugh said.
Brisbane’s Remembrance Day service will be held from 10:40am this Sunday November 11 at the Shrine of Remembrance in ANZAC Square, between Ann and Adelaide Streets. For more information call the RSL on 134 775.
