Queensland’s young cricket stars will descend on Brisbanenext week for the Queensland School Sport 12 years-and-under State Cricket Championships.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford congratulated the students on their selection in the tournament, to be held at Brisbane Grammar playing fields at Northgate from 11-15 November.
“More than 140 of Queensland’s top young cricketers will be competing at the five-day event,” Mr Welford said.
“These students have shown tremendous skill and talent in the regional trials and I wish them every success when they represent their regions at the state championships.
“Each team will play fourpool matches, with a series of finals matches being held on the last day of play to determine the championship team.
Mr Welford said a state championship trophy and a runners-up trophy will be awarded, as well as the Country Cup which will be given out after a playoff between the country teams.
“This event is a great opportunity for these young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting and sharing experiences with their peers from across the state,” he said.
“To be selected for a regional team to compete for state honours is a significant achievement and each of the competitors should feel very proud.”
“I have no doubt some of these students will follow in the footsteps of players like Ian Healy and Matthew Hayden, who both competed in these championships before launching their professional careers.”
Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who had worked hard to make the tournament a success.
Twelve sporting regions will be represented at the championships – Capricornia, Darling Downs, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, North West, South West, Wide Bay, South Coast, Northern, Peninsula and Sunshine Coast.
Thirteenstudents will be selected to compete at the National Cricket Exchange to be held in Victoria in January next year.
