The Honourable Kerry Shine

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine has asked for urgent advice from Crown Law on the likely success of an appeal against the conditions of the supervision order for convicted sex offender Darren Anthony Francis.

Mr Shine applied in March for a Continuing Detention Order or for Mr Francis’ supervision order to be amended when Mr Francis appeared in court for breaching his supervision order.

Mr Francis has been in custody awaiting hearing of this matter since 27 March.

“The Supreme Court yesterday ordered that Mr Francis be released with some amendments to his supervision order, including that he live at his mother’s current address,” Mr Shine said.

“I am concerned about the risk Mr Francis poses to the community, on these terms.

“I have asked Crown Law to consider an appeal to amend his supervision order so that he would reside on a prison reserve given his past offending.

“I’ll decide whether to appeal after considering the advice from Crown Law,” Mr Shine said.
