The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Minister for Mines and Energy Geoff Wilson today challenged miners to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave 2008 Mine Challenge 2008 and raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Speaking at the launch of the Mine Challenge held at the Foundation’s newest facility Mr Wilson said $400,000 had been raised this year and he encouraged the mining industry to raise even more money next year.

“For the last two years, Laing O’Rourke’s team at its BMA Coal Handling and Preparation Plant in Blackwater has been the best performer,” said Mr Wilson.

“With a staff of only 250, they raised $92,000 this year.

“The money raised through the Mine Challenge goes directly towards building facilities like the Clem Jones-Sunland Village.

“The village gives patients and their families a home-away-from-home when they are in Brisbane receiving medical treatment.

“Next year will be the third year for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave Mine Challenge.

“Let’s build on the successes of the last two years and raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause.”

To take part, workers from any Queensland mining company, supplier and union can shave their head or colour their hair to raise money for leukaemia.

“In 2006, the Mine Challenge raised $300,000 from 16 companies across 43 sites,” said Mr Wilson.

“This year, it attracted 29 companies across 55 sites, raising an incredible $400,000,” he said.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave Mine Challenge will run from 13 to 15 March 2008.
