The Honourable John Mickel

Unemployed or underemployed people from Logan and Northern Beaudesert can receive assistance through the State Government-funded What About You project.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said 80 people would receive job preparation or accredited training.

“The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provided Career Keys with $125,620 to organise this 48-week project,” Mr Mickel said.

“Sixty people will receive accredited training in Senior First Aid, business and retail.

“Another 20 will learn skills fundamental to any workplace like communication, teamwork and problem solving.”

Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the project is important because it will give local people the assistance they need to be competitive when applying for jobs.

“Queensland has a 30-year low unemployment rate of 3.6 per cent but the people who are still unable to join the workforce will need some assistance to make the transition,” Ms Scott said.

“The best way to do this is to support local organisations like Career Keys who can provide people with training and the skills that they need. That is what the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative does.”

Career Keys Executive Director Deidre Foreman said the project will assist 60 people in Logan and 20 from in and around Jimboomba.

“A mix of job preparation and accredited training positions will be available in each location,” Ms Foreman said.

“Participants will be able to complete some units from the Course in the Skills for the Future qualification and others from a Certificate III in Business or Retail depending on which field they want to join.

“The job preparation training will develop participant’s knowledge and experience using computers and other office equipment like faxes and photocopiers.

“The course will also help participants improve how they find and apply for jobs as well as helping their personal development.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
