Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle

The Gold Coast has been named host city of Australia’s top tourism conference for the next three years, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced today.

Ms Boyle said the Gold Coast would host the Tourism Futures National Conference from 2008 – 2010.

“The Gold Coast is a terrific choice for such a significant event on the nation’s tourism calendar,” Ms Boyle said.

“The Tourism Futures National Conference is Australia’s premier tourism forum, so it’s fitting that it be held at one of the country’s premier tourist destinations for the next three years.

“The conference plays a vital role in the direction of Australia’s tourism industry. It brings together around 400 tourism operators, policy makers, academics and tourism professionals to address challenges and opportunities.

“It focuses on sharing insights, presenting high level briefings on the industry’s current performance, forecasts, trends and best practices.”

Ms Boyle said the decision reinforced the Gold Coast’s significance as a business and events destination, as well as a key tourism region.

“Since Tourism Queensland created the conference in 2001, Queensland has been host every year, bar one, so I’m very happy to be announcing its return to the Gold Coast for the next three years,” she said.

“It’s the ideal destination to work and play.

“Delegates will enjoy world-class convention and business events facilities and will also be able to soak up the true Gold Coast experience, with all that the region has to offer.”

Ms Boyle said the Gold Coast had fast established itself as one of Australia’s most popular business tourism destinations.

“In the year to June 2007, more than 480,000 business visitors headed to the Gold Coast, an increase of 10 per cent.”

The 2008 Tourism Futures National Conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza Royal Pines Resort from 2-4 June 2008 and is proudly hosted by Tourism Queensland, Tourism Australia and Gold Coast Tourism.
