Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

North Queensland businesses will benefit from 80 people being trained in skill shortage industries thanks to a Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Cairns Desley Boyle announced Vocational Partnerships Group had been awarded $329,730 to run the Redeploy Reemploy Together We Can project.

“Forty Cairns and 40 Atherton Tablelands people will receive training in job preparation and job search skills and have paid work through community based organisations,” Mr Mickel said.

“Specifically the project will assist people who experience barriers to employment, including young people and parents and carers.”

Member for Cairns Desley Boyle said paid work as part of the project would benefit local industries currently experiencing skill shortages such as tourism, hospitality, business administration, retail and construction.

“This will provide participants with practical work experience and industry contacts through a hands-on approach to training,” Ms Boyle said.

“Programs like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”

Vocational Partnerships Group Program Coordinator Bobby May said the project aims to improve participants’ skills and experience – in turn improving their confidence and work attitude.

“Our aim is for participants to find employment or undertake further training at the completion of the project,” she said.

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
