Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Lindy Nelson-Carr today met members of the Aurukun Shire Council during her visit to the community.
“It was pleasing to speak with Indigenous leaders because together with their community, they are making inroads to create jobs and a future for the kids,” Ms Lindy Nelson-Carr said.
“The two-year Chalco bauxite mine feasibility study, underpinned by the Aurukun Local Partnerships Project, is putting it in a good position to capitalise on real jobs, economic and community development, and partnerships with the State Government,” she said.
“There’s no doubt genuine, secure jobs are important to the future of Aurukun.”
During her visit Ms Nelson-Carr presented certificates of appreciation to 10 community members who have built accommodation and office facilities for the Aurukun Local Partnership Project.
“These local men, who hand-mixed 60 square metres of concrete in the Aurukun heat, want to work and are a credit to themselves and their community,” she said.
“Because of their involvement in the project, Rio Tinto is already sizing them up for jobs on one of their sites.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said she believed Aurukun now has many opportunities and State Government would continue to work closely in partnership with the Aurukun community to ensure it has real choices into the future.
