South Bank Corporation is working with the State Government to assist 100 unemployed Indigenous people to develop their skills and improve their chances of joining and remaining in the workforce.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provided $181,500 to the South Bank Corporation for the Strategic Work Options project.

“The Strategic Work Options project will provide accredited training for 72 people in transport and distribution, hospitality, general construction and clothing production,” Mr Mickel said.

“These participants along with another 28 people will also receive job preparation training to give them the skills, motivation and confidence to make a good impression on potential employers.

“Even with unemployment at a 30-year low of 3.6 per cent in Queensland, businesses won’t hire someone who doesn’t demonstrate their skills through the application process.”

South Bank Corporation Parkland Services Manager Sheila Rodriguez said completing a recognised qualification was a great way for Indigenous people to impress employers and would also boost their own self-esteem.

“Sixty participants will be able to complete a Certificate II in Transport and Distribution (Warehouse and Storage), a Certificate II in Hospitality (Coffee Shop Kitchen Operations or a Certificate I in General Construction,” Ms Rodriguez said.

“South Bank has built up some good connections with the Indigenous community and when they showed interest in making and designing clothes we responded by organising for 12 people to complete a Certificate II in Clothing Production as part of this project.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
