CUP DAY COUP FOR MACKAY
Treasurer and Racing Minister Andrew Fraser will join the crowds at Mackay’s Oorlea Park today as the club conducts its historic first Melbourne Cup TAB race day.
Mackay will take centre stage as Queensland racing’s premier event on Melbourne Cup day after equine influenza halted events in the state’s southeast.
"Nobody likes to profit from other people’s misfortune but the reality is the equine influenza outbreak has delivered a golden opportunity for the Mackay Turf Club," Mr Fraser said.
"There’s a strong local card of races that will be televised Australia-wide, so it’s an opportunity for Oorlea Park to shine. It’s also great exposure for Mackay."
Mr Fraser, who is attending the race day with the Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin, will back a runner with an in-form Queensland jockey aboard as an "omen bet" to win the Melbourne Cup.
"As the Treasurer, I can’t go past a horse named Efficient, particularly with Michael Rodd riding him. They’re a winning team," Mr Fraser said.
In the Far North, Cairns’ Cannon Park is the only other Queensland track holding a TAB meeting today.
