Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Lindy Nelson-Carr will tomorrow (Tuesday, November 6) visit the remote Aboriginal community of Aurukun to meet Elders and members of the community.

Ms Nelson-Carr said while she was pleased with the roundtable held in Cairns with Mayors of Indigenous councils on October 19, she wanted to keep the momentum going.

“Aurukun has many positive things on the go at the moment including temporary accommodation nearing completion, with locals working on this project as part of the Chalco feasibility study,” she said.

“I’ll be keen to sit down with Councillors and the Mayor to work out how we, in partnership, are going to ensure that we capitalise on this opportunity.

“Economic development is the cornerstone of any community – Indigenous or otherwise. I want to make sure the local Indigenous Partnership Agreement is working and see what other opportunities are there to capitalise on it.

“Yarning with the community is an important step in the process.”

During the visit, the Minister will inspect progress on the Aurukun Local Partnership Project and meet members of the Aurukun Aboriginal Council including Mayor Neville Pootchemunka. She will also visit several local community centres, including the Arts and Crafts Centre, Wik Media, and the Knowledge Centre.

Along with the Queensland Government, supporting the project are the Aluminium Corporation of China Limited (Chalco) and the Aurukun Shire Council.
