Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Mount Isa residents experiencing homelessness will be able to access advice and support through a dedicated shopfront, thanks to significant State Government funding.
Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced Centacare would receive $655,000 to help buy its permanent office space in Miles Street.
Ms Nelson-Carr said the funding was part of the Queensland Government’s $235 million Responding to Homelessness Strategy.
“Centacare can now concentrate on offering the best possible service to individuals and families in Mount Isa rather than worrying about where the service will be located,” she said.
“People who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless will now have easier access to Centacare right in the heart of town so they can get help to secure permanent accommodation.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities last year allocated more than $3 million over three years for Centacare to help it support some of Mount Isa’s most vulnerable residents.
“Clients will now have easy access to crisis-supported accommodation and homeless early intervention services,” she said. “The homeless early intervention service is designed to help people at risk of losing their tenancy so they can stay in their current accommodation.
“The crisis accommodation service provides short-term accommodation for families and individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as support and advice on how to return to independent housing. Centacare’s role is to help improve the quality of life for families and individuals and I am pleased to support their work in Mt Isa.”
