FIRST STAGE OF ISABELLA STATE SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED

The 182 students of Isabella State School in Cairns today celebrated the official opening of stage one of their new school, which was completed early this year to address rapid growth in the region.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the State Government provided $7.79 million towards the $14.79 million project.

“Isabella State School is designed for the tropics and for the rapid growth in this popular part of Far North Queensland,” Mr Welford said.

“The school has eight classrooms, resource and support centres, covered areas, a large oval, three adventure play areas, an administration building and landscaped grounds.

“This first stage has the capacity to expand to 22 classrooms, catering for 500 students.

“The school is also fully networked with internet access to all classrooms and students can access laptops as they need them. The school will also have a new filming and editing suite in the coming year.

“Our Government wants the students of this region, like all students in Queensland, to have high-quality, modern education facilities and the best possible learning environment to help them reach their potential.”

The Federal Government contributed $7 million towards the project.

Representing the Minister at today’s ceremony, Member for Mulgrave Warren Pitt said Isabella State School had a strong community focus.

“This is an inclusive school, and was the third in the district to provide early intervention programs, offering services for children who need extra support before they start school,” Mr Pitt said.

“Isabella State School is an important and respected part of the community.

“Stage two of the school is now under construction and this will provide two additional junior classroom blocks, each with two classrooms.

“These classrooms will be ready for the 2008 school year.”
