The Honourable John Mickel

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is funding the National Retail Association (NRA) to assist 68 Redcliffe, Caboolture and north Brisbane parents and carers into the workforce

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Redcliffe Lillian van Litsenburg said people who left employment, or never started because they were caring for children or other family members, can have a hard time finding a job when they are ready to make the switch.

“Parents and carers often face difficulties because they don’t have recent work experience or lack appropriate skills,” Mr Mickel said.

“The Parents and Carers Entering Employment project will address these problems for local parents and carers through work experience and a mix of job preparation and accredited training in retail or aged care.

“Projects like this also lift people’s self-confidence and help them stay motivated as they look for, find and start a new job.”

Member for Redcliffe Lillian van Litsenburg said the project provides an excellent pathway for parents and carers to get started in important industries.

“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.6 per cent in Queensland, it is important to remember there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work,” Ms van Litsenburg said.

“Programs like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”

NRA General Manager – Training and Development Solutions Paul Willis, said all participants would partially complete a Certificate I in Work Education before moving onto industry training.

“NRA will deliver training in skills from the Certificate II in Retail to classes in Clontarf, Mango Hill and Caboolture,” Mr Willis said.

“The Brisbane North Institute of TAFE will deliver the Certificate III in Aged Care at Oznamvilla Aged Care facility in Clontarf.

“Both courses include some work experience which is a chance for participants to impress an employer and build up contacts in the field.

“Through the course we will also work with participants to improve their personal presentation and resume and job application writing.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
