Redland’s mums who are currently looking to return to the workforce can receive accredited training and job preparation assistance as part of a new State Government funded project.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Cleveland Phil Weightman said the Redland Shire Council received $63,120 from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative for the women2work project.

“This project will develop the skills of 40 women and help them prepare for the workplace,” Mr Mickel said.

“The course covers topics that will boost participant’s self-confidence throughout the process of searching and applying for a job and when they start work.

“The project will also encourage women to get their skills formally recognised through recognition of prior learning.”

Member for Cleveland Phil Weightman said the project is an excellent opportunity for women who are struggling to find work.

“While our economy is in a boom and unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.6 per cent in Queensland, now is the best chance we have to assist those who need help,” Mr Weightman said.

“Programs like this will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.

“It is great to have an initiative like Skilling Queenslanders for Work which funds local organisations like Redlands Shire Council to assist those who need it in our communities.”

Redland Shire Council Mayor Don Seccombe said the project would help participants throughout their careers and not just to get them into a job.

“Planning a career path, developing strong workplace communication techniques, learning to use a computer and the internet are just some of the topics the course covers that will help participants now and into the future,” Cr Seccombe said.

“Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE will deliver accredited training so participants can earn a Queensland Computer Skills Passport.

“The project also covers searching for suitable jobs, writing resumes and applications and how to prepare for interviews.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
