Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Thirty Logan West and Jimboomba locals will receive accredited training and
paid work to increase their chance of sustainable employment in landscaping
and construction on a new state government funded skilling project.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Member for Logan
John Mickel said the project would be run by Logan West Community Projects Group thanks to a $413,140 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.
“The Projects for the People project will help long term unemployed including parents, carers and older jobseekers who can become disillusioned about finding work because of a lack of recent experience or current skills,” Mr Mickel said.
“Dedicating resources to equipping people for work in skills-shortage industries is vital for the continued growth of local economies and the prosperity of Queensland.
“Logan West Community Projects group has been funded to run Projects for the People since 2000.
“Last year’s project was a spectacular success with 76% of participants finding work.”
Group Committee President Bob Bricknell said the community would also benefit as participants perform paid work at local community-based sites.
“These will include Kyabra Community Association, Yugumbir State School, Flagstone State School, Regents Park State School and Greenbank State School, among others,” Mr Bricknell said.
“They will gain a broad range of skills to equip them for work in local skill shortage areas.
“In addition to paid work, participants will get nationally recognised training and job preparation support to increase their chances of successfully finding work at the end of the project.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the
skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
