Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Sunshine Coast residents will immerse themselves in a celebration of Italian culture and language, when the Nambour Civic Centre hosts A Taste of Italy this Friday. (Friday 2 November)
Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Italian community, estimated at 6000 on the Sunshine Coast, are strong advocates for multiculturalism and community participation.
“A Taste of Italy will bring Sunshine Coast residents together with 250 students from nine state primary schools for an Italian themed concert,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Multicultural Affairs Queensland, through the Queensland Government’s Multicultural Assistance Program, provided a $3000 grant towards the event.
“The event will showcase Italian culture through song, dance and story telling, and highlight the skills Sunshine Coast school children have learned in their language studies."
Ms Nelson-Carr said each performance was developed by Italian teachers to provide a meaningful learning context for students and shine the spotlight on Sunshine Coast schools.
“As the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, I am delighted to support events like this, because they combine student participation and language education.
“I am also pleased to see some 12,400 students currently learning Italian on the Sunshine Coast.”
Director of the Italian School Committee, Gabriella Matacchioni, said A Taste of Italy would raise the profile and value of language and culture education in the community even further.
“The Italian School Committee works with Language Other Than English (LOTE) teachers and Education Queensland, to support Italian learning programs,” Mrs Matacchioni said.
“A Taste of Italy showcases the cultural understanding developed in these programs and acknowledges student excellence.
"Student performances will illustrate the quality of language learning in schools and promote the study of languages in an entertaining way.”
The Italian Consul for Queensland, Dott Francesco Capecchi, will also present awards to students, including the Arlecchino’s Choice Award, which honours an Italian carnival character with a spirit for fun.
Tickets are available through the Nambour Civic Centre on 5475 7777.
