The Honourable Desley Boyle

A kite festival, jazz cruise, cooking school and one of the world’s most famous zoos are competing along with a diverse group of Sunshine Coast operators for Queensland’s top tourism honours.

Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said 17 Sunshine Coast enterprises were among more than 200 tourism operators entered in the Queensland Tourism Awards 2007, presented by Queensland Airports Limited in Townsville on November 10.

“The Queensland Tourism Awards 2007 is the most competitive ever, reflecting high standards of excellence in all sectors of Queensland’s vibrant tourism industry and all over the State,” Ms Boyle said.

“The Sunshine Coast has operators competing in 14 of 25 Queensland Tourism Awards categories, highlighting the wide range of tourism experiences, services and products on offer in and around the Sunshine Coast.

“As well as high-profile operators, attractions and accommodation providers around Queensland, the Queensland Tourism Awards also celebrates the ‘behind the scenes’ achievements tourists might not notice.

“Well-established operators and newer entrants to the industry are all represented, showcasing the energy and creativity that is a hallmark of Queensland’s tourism industry.

“The number, quality and diversity of Queensland Tourism Awards entries also highlight the vast range of employment and investment opportunities tourism offers on the Sunshine Coast and around Queensland.

“I wish Sunshine Coast operators all the best.”

The Queensland Tourism Awards is organised by Tourism Queensland and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC).

QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said the Council had introduced a mentoring program for entrants this year.

“The response was very positive and this was reflected in the high standards of submissions again this year. All entrants are great ambassadors for their industry and I wish them luck,” he said.

The Queensland Tourism Awards 2007 is presented by the awards’ principal partner, Queensland Airports Limited, and will be held at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on Saturday 10 November.

Tickets cost $180 per person and are available from www.queenslandtourismawards.com.au or by calling Melissa Webster on (07) 3535 5375 or emailing melissa.webster@tq.com.au.

Queensland Airports Limited owns and operates the Gold Coast, Townsville and Mount Isa airports, through which 5.3 million passengers passed in 2006.
