The Honourable Anna Bligh
Premier Anna Bligh was joined by almost 80 school students today when she officially launched The Smith Family’s 2007 Christmas Appeal at Parliament House.
Ms Bligh, who presented a cheque for $25,000 to kick-start the appeal, said the annual Christmas Appeal played a vital role in raising funds for The Smith Family’s ongoing education programs for disadvantaged students.
“This year, The Smith Family is aiming to raise $5 million nationally with $1 million from here in Queensland to help fund its Learning for Life program,” Ms Bligh said.
“Learning for Life is a National program that currently assists thousands of disadadvanted families and of that 5,600 Queensland students . The funding provides education essentials like textbooks, school equipment and uniforms plus access to a critical network of support including mentoring, tutoring & coaching .
“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty and it underpins the future of this great state of ours.
"I encourage all Queenslanders to dig deep this Christmas and make a donation to The Smith Family Christmas Appeal so that their great work can continue and grow.
“A good education can open doors for Queensland kids and I cannot think of a more lasting or important gift any of us could give this Christmas,” she said.
