The Honourable Desley Boyle

One of the United Kingdom’s largest engineering firms has opened an office in the Brisbane suburb of Milton.

Scott Wilson Railways, a division of the Scott Wilson Group, made the move following meetings in London last year with former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie.

Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle tonight attended the official launch of the new office and welcomed the company to Queensland.

“It is terrific to see yet another international company has recognised the significance of Queensland as a regional hub. With our ideal climate, skilled workforce, booming economy, pro-business Government and proximity to the Asia-Pacific region, Queensland is a dream location – the perfect place to live, work and play,” Ms Boyle said.

“As well as the efforts of our former Premier, the work of Invest Queensland and our London Trade and Investment Office helped entice the new Scott Wilson Railways office here.

“It will service the Australian and regional rail markets as well as be a base for the Scott Wilson Group’s international projects, particularly in mining, ports and the environment.”

Ms Boyle said the new Brisbane office was now part of a network of 78 Scott Wilson offices around the globe. With start-up staff of 10, the company is expected to increase its Brisbane staff to 100 within five years.

“Our Government welcomes Scott Wilson Railways as an important partner in growing a vibrant, internationally-competitive rail industry for Queensland. Rail transport is very important for our State. Queensland boasts Australia’s largest rail network with 9500km of track servicing 1.7 million square kilometres,” she said.

“This new office will help address the skills shortage and bring new infrastructure capability to the State.

Ms Boyle said the move was timely considering the Government was currently implementing the $82 billion South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan to deliver infrastructure to one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.

She said the Scott Wilson Group’s migration to Queensland added to a growing list of international companies which had established regional head offices in the State. They include IBM, Boeing Australia, Virgin Blue, Ludowici, Raytheon Australia, Betchel, Hatch, Taisei Corporation, Lihir Gold and Terrell International.
