Queensland’s young cricket stars will descend on Townsville this week as the city hosts the Queensland School Sport 14 years-and-under State Cricket Championships.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford congratulated the students on their selection for their regional teams.
“These students have shown tremendous skill and talent in the regional trials and I wish them every success when they represent their regions at the state championships,” Mr Welford said.
More than 120 of Queensland’s top young cricketers will be competing at the five-day event, to be held at a number of locations around Townsville from 1-5 November.
Each team will play four pool matches. A series of finals matches will be held on the last day of play to determine the championship team and the positions of the other teams.
Mr Welford said a state championship trophy would be awarded as well as four individual awards for best batsman, best bowler, best all-rounder and most dismissals by a wicketkeeper.
“This event is a great opportunity for the young athletes to compete at a high level while meeting their peers from across the state and sharing their experiences,” he said.
“To be selected for your region and to compete for state honours is a significant achievement, and something these young people should feel proud of.”
Ten sporting regions will be represented at the championships – Capricornia, Darling Downs, Metropolitan West, Metropolitan North, Metropolitan East, Wide Bay, South Coast, Northern, Peninsula and Sunshine Coast.
Mr Welford thanked the dedicated teachers and school staff who had worked hard to make the tournament a success.
Twelve students will be selected to compete at the National championships to be held in Maroochydore next March.
