Brisbane South and Northern Gold Coast employers will soon benefit from 39 newly-skilled jobseekers ready to take up posts in local business thanks to two new skilling projects running in Coomera and Logan.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the projects would be run by Y-Care (South East Queensland) under a $62,600 Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative grant.

“Participants on the Coomera project will get accredited training in childcare while those on the Logan project will gain skills that will help them become motor mechanics,” Mr Mickel said.

“Local employers in both of these industries are struggling to find skilled staff.

“We all know that unemployment is historically low but a more telling figure is the labour force participation rate which is less than 70%.

“Many jobseekers aren’t in the labour force because they don’t have the experience required to take part in projects like these which help update skill sets and increase confidence”

Y-Care Program Manager Anne Moore said the project included vocational placements which would give participants valuable real-world experience and access to local employers.

“Accredited training will be delivered through Certificate III in Children’s Services or Certificate I in Automotive,” Ms Moore said.

“Participants will receive support which will increase their chances of finding a job at the end of the project that includes training in life skills and job preparation.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $82 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving customised employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
