Community groups can apply for a share of $65,000 to help spread the message that domestic and family violence are unacceptable, Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said.

Grants are available for activities, projects and events staged in Queensland during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May next year.

“Domestic and family violence unfortunately exist in our society and have devastating long-term effects on families, especially children,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“These grants help communities raise their profile and promote local services and supports to people experiencing domestic and family violence,” she said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, May 1 to 31, promotes the importance of good relationships and how to seek assistance.

“Domestic and family violence is not a private matter – it’s up to each one of us to take a stand and say enough is enough,” she said.

“Perpetrators can be men or women but unfortunately, women and children tend to be targeted.

“We will continue to concentrate our efforts on encouraging men to take personal responsibility for their behaviour and take steps towards positively changing their lives to avoid this type of violence in the home.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities provided more than $13 million each year to community services to provide a wide range of services to reduce domestic and family violence through early intervention and support.
