The Honourable Desley Boyle

Tourism Queensland was named Best State Tourism Organisation at the Australian Society of Travel Writers’ 2007 Travel Journalism Awards for Excellence, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said.

“The travel writers voted Tourism Queensland the state organisation that provided the best service to their industry,” she said.

“The award acknowledges Tourism Queensland’s hard work in promoting travel to Queensland destinations to both the consumer and travel trade.

“Tourism Queensland works closely with travel writers from around the world to get media exposure for Queensland’s tourism destinations.

“Last financial year, Tourism Queensland generated approximately $325 million worth of domestic and international tourism through pitching Queensland stories to editors and through familiarisation trips.

“$245 million of this figure was domestic tourism publicity and $80 million was international tourism publicity.

“In fact, for every $1 of Tourism Queensland funds spent on domestic publicity, Queensland receives $355 in publicity value.”

Ms Boyle said familiarisations were heavily supported by the tourism industry and offered the opportunity to showcase a region to thousands of potential visitors through magazines, newspapers and television.

“Last year, Queensland welcomed almost 20 million Australians and international travellers,” she said.

"These excellent results demonstrate the work being undertaken by Tourism Queensland is delivering real results and, it is no surprise to those in the business, it is leading the way at a national level.”

The Australian Society of Travel Writers is a non-profit organisation of journalists and public relations professionals dedicated to reporting and promoting the travel industry.
