Premier Anna Bligh was joined by country music legend Lee Kernaghan today to officially launch the Spirit of the Bush concert which is hoped to attract up to 20,000 people.
The concert will be held at Bassett Park, Roma Racecourse, Roma on Sunday 28 October.
Premier Bligh said the Queensland Government was delighted to provide $150,000 in sponsorship for this free public concert, and thanked Lee and fellow performers for their generosity in providing a much needed break for farming communities in the region.
“Queensland is currently facing the worst drought on record. These are tough times for our regional communities and this concert is all about giving farming families and the greater community a break to come together to enjoy a great day of music.”
“The Government is proud to be involved, and with crowds of 20,000 set to attend the concert on Sunday, it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest events the region has ever seen,” she said.
Lee Kernaghan and friends performed his hit song Spirit of the Bush at the launch as a taste of what’s to come at Sunday’s free concert.
The hit song Spirit of the Bush, recorded by Lee Kernaghan, Adam Brand and Steve Forde, is currently number one on the ARIA Country Singles Chart. 100 per cent of profits from the song and video are donated to the Aussie Helpers charity that is assisting drought affected farming families across the country.
Lee said: “The hardship that many farmers continue to experience as a result of many years of sustained drought is profound and it is hoped that this song will not only help raise much needed funds for the AUSSIE HELPERS program, but will also be a meaningful tribute of the fighting spirit and mateship that is so much a part of country life today.”
“I’m thrilled to be able to be a part of the Spirit of the Bush concert and I thank the Queensland Government for its support.”
Lee Kernaghan will lead an impressive line-up of performers for the concert including Adam Brand, Leo Sayer, Steve Forde, The Sunny Cowgirls, Aleyce Simmonds and Shea Fisher as well as local artists Ned and the Kellys.
The Spirit of the Bush concert is part of the Queensland Government’s Blueprint for the Bush initiative, a ten-year plan to build a sustainable, liveable and prosperous rural Queensland.
The Premier thanked the organisers, the performers for giving their time and the other sponsors and local council involved in making this event possible.
