The Honourable John Mickel

The Greenbank Cricket Club is among a host of Logan area community buildings and surrounds to have received a facelift, as another cricket season is set to gain momentum in coming weeks.

The hard work of local jobseekers graduating from a Skilling Queenslanders for Work-funded project has been integral to the community renovations.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Member for Logan John Mickel joined graduates today who had completed the $400, 970 Project for the People 2006/2007 it was co-ordinated by Logan West Community Projects Group, it involved four intakes of eight long-term unemployed people during the past year.

Mr Mickel said “The project has provided several benefits for the Logan community, as well as paid work and experience for the jobseekers involved.

“The most recent group of eight graduating from this program have undertaken extensive work at Greenbank Cricket Club. The skills gained included paving, the construction of a 60-metre retaining wall, a timber bench, concrete slab for a gazebo and an extension to the practice wicket.

“Other community buildings to benefit from the work of these participants are Logan House, Browns Plains State High School grounds and housing sponsored by the Kyabra Community Group.

“This Skilling Queenslanders for Work project has increased community capacity by giving local people the skills they need for work while making it easier for employers get the skilled workers they need,” said Mr Mickel.

Logan West Community Projects Group's Project Co-ordinator Bob Crowley said he is delighted to see the jobseekers dedicate themselves to these community projects while securing employment as a result.

“I am very pleased to say that six of the previous eight participants have gone on to full-time employment while a seventh is likely to join them shortly.

“The most recent group of graduates have only just completed their program, but three people have already found jobs in various roles in South-East Queensland.

“Those graduating have also received a Senior First Aid certificate and Construction Site Safety Blue Card which will undoubtedly assist them in their work-related endeavours,” said Mr Crowley.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s
