Exporting products and services, as varied as mineral grinding equipment and agricultural seed breeding, to the world has earned top export awards for two Toowoomba-based businesses.

Premier Anna Bligh congratulated Russell Mineral Equipment (RME), which walked away with the Regional Exporter of the Year prize, and Pacific Seeds, which won the Agribusiness Award, at the Export Awards presentation ceremony held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight.

Premier Bligh said RME, a specialist mining technology company, has built a global reputation for supplying unique, custom-made mineral grinding and mill relining processing technologies.

“When RME's founder, John Russell, started his mineral engineering business more than two decades ago, the annual sales were just $12 000, but today the company sells millions of dollars worth of mining solutions worldwide,” Ms Bligh said.

“RME equipment is now used in most world mining markets including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Ghana, Canada, USA, Chile, Argentina and Tanzania.”

Ms Bligh said Pacific Seeds, one of Australia’s leading hybrid agricultural seed breeding and marketing companies, has been exporting a wide range of seed and seed technology to clients around the world, including farmers and food manufacturers.

"For more than 45 years, Pacific Seeds has been providing innovative crop varieties to farmers worldwide, including on home soil in Australia. They have a good track record of commercialising new varieties, taking them from the research stage and putting them in the farmers’ paddocks.

“The agribusiness company, renowned for breeding, producing and marketing varieties of grain has established markets in Asia, Africa, Middle East and South America for its forage sorghum, corn, sunflower, canola and pearl millet.”

Minister for Trade John Mickel said Russell Mineral Equipment and Pacific Seeds are again proof that any innovative business can achieve success in the world market by having good products and smart ideas coupled with a dedicated team that focuses on generating export sales.

“Exports create jobs, so it's crucial that we do everything we can to boost our international market share. A strong regional export base makes for a strong Queensland,’’ he said.

Mr Mickel said the Queensland Government is committed to helping exporters succeed through its programs and services, and aims to inspire innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and build sustainable communities.

The Export Awards program, now in its 18th year, is a very public way of recognising and celebrating the success of outstanding exporters, who make a valuable contribution to the growth and development of the Queensland economy.

Winners of the 2007 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards will automatically progress as national finalists into the Australian Export Awards 2007, to be held on 22 November in Brisbane.
