The Honourable Anna Bligh
Exporting products and services, as varied as moisture analysers and top-class education, to the world has earned awards for two North Queensland businesses.
Premier Anna Bligh congratulated Mackay-based Callidan Instruments which won the Small Business Award, and Townsville-based James Cook University which took the Education Award, at the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards presentation ceremony held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre tonight.
Ms Bligh said Callidan, an advanced manufacturing technology company established in 2004, was listed among the top 40 start-ups in Australia in 2005.
“Callidan is one fine example how a small business is making a big impact worldwide with its state-of-the-art product, Moistscan, which is exported to markets around the world and used by mining, food, building material, timber and pharmaceutical industries,” she said.
“Cutting-edge technology at an affordable price has enabled Callidan to make major sales overseas, and helped triple its workforce.”
Ms Bligh also congratulated James Cook University for taking its distinction in teaching and research to new heights of international success.
“In addition to having a leading reputation in the Australian education sector, the university has developed an international profile through its alliances with other education institutions and research centres from all over the world.
“James Cook, Australia’s leading tropical research university, has a campus in Singapore and offers degrees across the Asia Pacific region including China, Fiji and Malaysia.”
Minister for Trade John Mickel said Callidan and James Cook University are again proof that any innovative business, regardless of size and location, can achieve success in the world market by having good products and smart ideas, coupled with a dedicated team that focuses on generating export sales.
Mr Mickel said exports create jobs, so it's crucial that we do everything we can to boost our exports. A strong regional export base makes for a strong Queensland.
“The Queensland Government is committed to helping exporters succeed through its programs and services, and aims to inspire innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and build sustainable communities.”
The Export Awards program, now in its 18th year, is a very public way of recognising and celebrating the success of outstanding exporters, who make a valuable contribution to the growth and development of the Queensland economy.
Winners of the 2007 Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards will automatically progress as national finalists into the Australian Export Awards 2007, to be held on 22 November in Brisbane.
