Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Rockhampton’s redeveloped Musgrave Street is starting to take shape, with Main Roads ready to switch on the new traffic lights at the Charles Street intersection tomorrow morning Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.
The new lights are the first of two new signals to be installed along Musgrave Street as part of the $2 million corridor upgrade.
The Musgrave Street works are part of a long-term traffic management plan for the Rockhampton CBD, which also includes Fitzroy Street on the south side.
Mr Pitt said the construction crews had pressed on with the task to deliver safety improvements to Rockhampton drivers.
"The crews have done an excellent job on the new intersection," Mr Pitt said.
"Only a month ago the Charles Street intersection was a construction site, but what we have today achieves the streetscape appearance which is so important to retain along the Musgrave Street corridor.
"The traffic signals will also play an important role in ensuring safety for motorists and managing traffic flow," he said.
With the Charles Street works now complete, works will move north along Musgrave Street to the intersection with Edington Street.
"Works on the centre median widening have already started on this section, with the construction of turning lanes and a second set of traffic signals at Edington Street still to be completed" Mr Pitt said.
Motorists are reminded to observe all warning signs, speed restrictions and traffic controller directions while the Musgrave Street upgrade is completed.
The project remains on schedule for completion in March 2008.
