The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Vulnerable young people in Cherbourg – including those in contact with the youth justice system – are receiving improved support and services thanks to the establishment of a $426,000 facility.

Minister for Communities and Youth Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Youth Justice Service Centre at the Jumbunna Centre on Broadway Street was a key part of the Queensland Government’s efforts to address youth offending and make communities safer places to live.

“In 2006, the Department of Communities identified a significantly large proportion of youth justice clients lived in Cherbourg,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“To reduce the number of Indigenous young people on youth justice orders, a decision was made to relocate the Murgon Youth Justice Service to Cherbourg.

“Since the relocation, the service has seen a 40% reduction in the number of young Indigenous people on youth justice orders.

“This is a fantastic result, and shows how valuable the work carried out at the centre is.”

The Cherbourg Youth Justice Service Centre was officially opened today by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister Rachel Nolan.

Cherbourg’s purpose-designed Youth Justice Service Centre enables the co-location of a number of important services including:
• Youth Justice Conferencing
• Safe Haven Project
• Indigenous Domestic and Family Violence Project
• Child Responsiveness Communities Project.

Ms Nolan said an important reason for the centre’s success was its specialist response to offending.

“This offers better outcomes for young people, their families, and the community,” Ms Nolan said.

“The centre enables a comprehensive and cooperative approach to be taken to help some of the region’s most vulnerable young people, while making Cherbourg a safer place for everyone.”
