Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson met gas industry representatives in Dalby today to promote the State Government’s $4 million gas rebate scheme.
Minister Wilson said around 2600 Dalby customers were eligible to receive a gas rebate of up to $500.
“Households that receive their gas from the Dalby Town Council, as their gas retailer, can apply for a gas rebate. Some Dalby households may have already received a rebate, but we want more people to climb on board this scheme,” Mr Wilson said.
The Minister said around 7500 households throughout the state were eligible for a rebate of up to $500.
“The Department of Mines and Energy is working with the Dalby Town Council and licensed gasfitters, gas appliance stores, hot water manufacturers and gas distributors to promote the scheme and its benefits,” he said.
“The $4 million gas rebate scheme is a win for the environment and a win for Dalby households. Gas has half the carbon dioxide emissions than electricity from coal-fired power stations.
“Changing from electricity to gas for heating water and cooking can reduce a household’s greenhouse gas emissions by more than two tonnes a year,” Mr Wilson said.
The Minister said the scheme would apply to existing homes where the homeowner installs gas appliances to replace electric, and some non-electric appliances.
“The gas rebate fulfils an election commitment to the people of Queensland.
“Eligibility for the rebate will apply from the very day we announced our commitment – 7 September, 2006,” Mr Wilson said.
“Around the state, the gas rebate scheme will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions at a household level by around 15,000 tonnes over the next three years. That’s equivalent to taking 3,500 cars off the road.
“Dalby households and the Dalby Town Council can both play a role in helping to meet the challenges of climate change,” Mr Wilson said.
The Minister said the gas rebate scheme would apply to existing homes connected to reticulated natural gas, reticulated LPG and bottled LPG.
Householders can apply directly to their retailer, which is the Dalby Town Council for natural gas customers, or their local LPG retailer, who will process the application and deliver the rebate on behalf of the State Government.
Mr Wilson congratulated the Dalby Town Council for working with the State Government to implement the scheme.
“The continued support of the gas industry will be instrumental in the success of the scheme,” he said.
“LPG and gas generally are destined to play a big role in helping to meet the energy needs of our rapidly-growing population,” Mr Wilson said.
