From Gin Gin to New Farm, neighbourhood hubs and community services across Queensland are making a difference to the lives of Queenslanders with a disability.

And Minister for Communities and Disability Services Lindy Nelson-Carr has tonight presented some of them with Awards for Excellence in Workforce Development at a special ceremony at the State Library in Brisbane.

“These awards are an opportunity to showcase successful ideas and strategies being used by non-government organisations right across the State,” she said.

“These initiatives are geared towards building the skills of workers, strengthening workplace practices and bringing about an even higher standard of service.”

Awards were presented in the following categories: Effective Leadership by a Board of Management; Encouraging a Learning Culture; Culturally Inclusive Practices; Collaborative Achievement, and; Sector Recognition.

The winners were chosen by a judging panel from a strong field of applicants around the State.

“I congratulate the winners as well as the nominees who have taken the time to enter the program and share their expertise,” she said.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the awards were a cornerstone of the State Government’s $26.9 million Strengthening Non-Government Organisations strategy.

“This awards program is one of several initiatives helping to build the capacity of organisations so they can provide sustainable services funded by the Department of Communities and Disability Services Queensland.

“The awards are a great opportunity to bring these community achievers together to say ‘well done, you are making a real difference to the lives of many Queenslanders every day’.”

The awards are managed on behalf of the Department of Communities and Disability Services Queensland by the Health and Community Services Workforce Council, a key partner in the Strengthening Non-Government Organisations strategy.
