Minister for Communities and Youth Lindy Nelson-Carr has today announced a Queensland children’s champion has won this year’s coveted White Flame Award.

The Save the Children annual awards ceremony at Parliament House also commemorates Universal Children’s Day.

“I am honoured to present the White Flame Award this year to a most deserving recipient – Sue Davison,” Ms Lindy Nelson-Carr said.

“For more than 30 years Sue has given her expertise and heart to helping some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, our children and families in need,” she said.

“Through her work at the Department of Child Safety and her advocacy for the rights of children affected by domestic and family violence, she has made a big difference to the lives of many Queenslanders.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said National Children’s Week and Universal Children’s Day today were important reminders for everyone, not just parents, to share the responsibility of caring for and supporting children and young people.

“As the Minister for Communities and Youth and as a mother, I understand the importance of prevention, early intervention and supporting our kids to give them the best start in life so they can make positive choices about their future,” she said.

“The State Government is committed to providing young Queenslanders with opportunities to contribute to and participate in their communities, and to feel safe, valued and empowered.

“I am proud to acknowledge and celebrate people who are helping protect and nurture young Queenslanders, as Sue has done, because children truly are our future.”

The annual White Flame Award is presented in Queensland and Victoria and is in memory of Save the Children founder Eglantyne Jebb. The White Flame ethos promoted by Save the Children in Queensland is about protecting children and preventing child abuse and neglect.
