Heading into this year’s Schoolies Week, the Queensland Government is again putting up money to help ensure that young people celebrate safely.

Minister for Communities and Youth Lindy Nelson-Carr said Schoolies Week on Magnetic Island would benefit from a $20,000 grant to Lead On Australia, a youth focused community organisation aimed at developing real-life projects and community activities for young people.
Lead On’s Townsville branch will coordinate a fun, safe program on Magnetic Island, which will run day and night from Sunday 18 November to Friday 23 November.

“The funding will support an event coordinator, security measures, and a wide range of free and subsidised activities.

“We want schoolies to have a good time, but we also want them to play it safe and sound on Magnetic Island and every other location where 2007 high school leavers gather to mark their transition from the school ground, ” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Magnetic Island events will include discounted water sports and day trips to the reef, while a $20 registration fee will provide a Schoolies ID and allow unlimited access to dance parties, a skate competition, late night movies and other special activities.

“As well, a free bus service will operate from 6 pm to 2 am on each of the days, thanks to the RACQ and Townsville City Council,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“Sunferries, Queensland Health’s Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Services, Hotel Chaplaincy’s Red Frogs, Townsville Thuringowa Safe Communities, and Magnetic Island businesses are also getting behind safe schoolies celebrations offering sponsorship, discounts and support.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said Police, Ambulance, Surf Life Saving Association staff and Schoolies Week volunteers would increase their presence during the week-long celebrations.

Lead On Manager, Amanda Blizzard is urging all school leavers to take their Year 12 Student I.D. to Magnetic Island, so they can register to participate. Registration on arrival is vital to assist organisers to identify legitimate schoolies, reduce the number of non-schoolies participating in official activities, and provide important emergency contact information should it be required.

Information sessions for school leavers and their parents will be held between 6pm and 7pm at Thuringowa Library on Wednesday 7 November and Aitkenvale Library on Thursday 8 November.
