Twelve long-term unemployed people from in and around Bundaberg are renovating Elliot Heads Surf Lifesaving Club as they prepare to return to the workforce.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said working on the building will give the participants construction skills and worksite experience.

“These people will complete a 16-week paid work placement on this project while also earning a Construction Blue Card,” Mr Mickel said.

“The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provided $197,400 to Skill Centred Queensland to organise and run this project.

“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.6 per cent in Queensland, it is important to remember there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“The project will assist unemployed people meet the expectations of local construction companies who are struggling to find skilled and motivated staff.

“With facilities at the Elliot Heads Surf Lifesaving Club overhauled the community will also benefit.”

Skill Centred Queensland CEO Gerry Crotty said the participants had installed new insulation and restored and repaired some of the toilet facilities.

“The recent rain has meant the practical work on site has been delayed a little but the participants have been kept busy with the work for the Certificate I in General Construction,” Mr Crotty said.

“The next part of the project is building an outdoor verandah which involves measuring and levelling the site, digging post holes and pouring a concrete slab.

“The participants are gaining experience in a lot of different areas of construction and we are also working on personal development and job preparation so they can prepare a strong application and are ready to go as soon as they finish this project.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
