Premier Anna Bligh will create a senior new position to speed up access and response by the State Government on agriculture and rural issues.

Today, while addressing the AgForce 24-member Executive in Brisbane, she said the new position of Rural Advisor in the office of Director General in the Department of Premier and Cabinet was developed after discussions with AgForce president Peter Kenny in my first week as premier.

“The new Advisor will be a direct conduit to key decision makers within government and to myself as Premier.

“In simplest terms, the job description is - enhance the wellbeing of our rural communities.

“The Rural Advisor will act as a point of contact for representatives of Queensland’s rural communities, rural and regional industries, local government bodies and state agencies.

“AgForce will be invited to join the selection panel so that a person with the right skill set and understanding of rural regional issues can be selected.

“The Rural Advisor will provide advice to me, and the key rural-orientated Ministers (Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland, Primary Industries, Main Roads and Local Government, Natural Resources and Water).

“The Advisor will provide first-hand advice on the impact on rural communities and regional and rural industries of initiatives such as; the Blueprint for the Bush, the Rural Economic Development and Infrastructure Plan, the State Infrastructure Plan and other state and federal government initiatives.”

“The Rural Advisor will foster and develop effective stakeholder relationships, business and industry networks and whole-of-government communication infrastructure to enable the timely identification and representation of rural issues.

Every Cabinet briefing submission will still continue to have a Rural Impact assessment.

It will be at the SO1 ($105,000) level and advertised immediately and is expected to be appointed by Christmas.
