Emerald’s central business district is set to undergo a major revitalisation thanks to State Government grants totalling more than $3.27 million.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today visited Emerald to present an initial cheque for $173,000 towards the project, which will be completed in time for Queensland’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2009.

“Emerald is one of Queensland’s iconic bush towns, boasting a rich cultural history and a strong mining and agricultural base,” Mr Pitt said.

“The revitalisation of the town’s central business district will give locals and visitors a vibrant new public space to enjoy for years to come and will enhance the town’s unique character and reputation.”

Mr Pitt said the $173,000 had been delivered under the Government’s Q150 Legacy Infrastructure Program, on top of $3.1 million committed through the Regional Centres Program.

“The Q150 program aims to create cultural and recreational facilities that celebrate Queensland’s past and leave enduring legacies of our 150th birthday celebrations,” he said.

“Projects funded under the program will be permanent additions to the Queensland landscape and will reflect some aspect of the State’s history, people, places and future.

“These funds will assist Emerald council with its master planning and preliminary design phase, while the $3.1 million Regional Centres Program funding will assist with construction works in stage one of the project.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Emerald and the State Government is pleased to help bring the project to fruition through the provision of $3,273,000.”
