Disability organisations from across Queensland are gathering in Brisbane for the inaugural National Disability Services (NDS) Queensland State Conference.

Opening the two-day forum this morning, Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr praised the strong partnership between State Government and non-government service providers who were making a difference to the lives of Queenslanders with a disability.

“As a peak body, NDS Queensland has played a significant role in developing initiatives across the disability sector and I am proud of the effective working partnership that has developed in recent years,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“This partnership has led to a unique synergy which offers enhanced opportunities for the future of disability services right across State,” she said.

“I am delighted we are working closely together to continuously improve systems and services so Disability Services Queensland can become even more responsive to the needs of people with a disability, their families and carers.”

Ms Nelson-Carr told the Communities of Practice conference delegates the Queensland Government was committed to increasing the capacity of the non-government sector.

“Among significant developments is the Strengthening Non Government Organisations Strategy, where the government is providing additional funding to assist NGOs to improve their sustainability,” she said.

“NGOs provide crucial services to people all over Queensland so it is vital we ensure they can continue to do what they do best.”

Delegates will spend the next two days discussing a range of issues and how non-government organisations can share ideas and experiences.
