The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Community projects in the Nebo, Mackay, Duaringa and Broadsound Shire areas will have an opportunity to share in more than $218,000 in funding as part of Powerlink Queensland’s 2007 Community Benefits Program, Minister for Energy Geoff Wilson announced today.
“Powerlink has several new transmission line projects in the Bowen Basin region, including new powerlines between Broadsound and Nebo, Nebo and the Pioneer Valley, Nebo and Queensland Rail’s Mindi Substation, and Lilyvale and Blackwater,” Mr Wilson said.
“I have no doubt that there are numerous community projects in the Bowen Basin area that could benefit from this funding.
“I encourage interested groups to contact Powerlink or their local Council for an information package,” he said.
Member for Fitzroy Jim Pearce welcomed the funding for worthwhile community projects.
“Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program aims to provide tangible and lasting benefits to local communities in close proximity to new transmission line projects,” Mr Pearce said.
“It’s a commendable initiative and it’s Powerlink’s way of giving something back to the community,” he said.
Powerlink’s Chief Executive, Gordon Jardine said that in the past Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program has funded many worthwhile community projects across Queensland, including the installation of a new roof on a community hall, purchasing play equipment for a local playgroup, and landscaping for a respite centre.
“Powerlink recognises that we have significant program of works occurring throughout the Nebo, Mackay, Duaringa and Broadsound Shires,” Mr Jardine said.
“Through our Community Benefits Program, Powerlink aims to make a positive contribution to improve services, facilities, or environmental outcomes for communities in close vicinity to these projects.”
Funding provided for the CBP is in addition to the compensation paid to landowners directly affected by transmission line easements, and is allocated to selected community projects that can demonstrate broad community support.
Applications for funding will close on Friday 23 November 2007. Community groups can obtain more information on Powerlink’s Community Benefits Program by telephoning Powerlink on Freecall 1800 635 369, or obtaining an information package at the Nebo, Mackay, Duaringa and Broadsound Shire offices or from Powerlink’s website www.powerlink.com.au
