The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence has today said Federal Liberal Party Candidates are getting increasingly desperate as they see their chances of winning the Federal election becoming more remote.

"The Liberal Candidate for Capricornia, Scott Kilpatrick is the latest offender to engage in predictable political tricks, by criticising policing in Rockhampton to attempt to score cheap points." Ms Spence said.

"The numbers of police in the central Police Region which includes Rockhampton, have gone from 545 when this Government was first elected in 1998 to 767 as at 30 June this year. This is an increase of over 40%." Ms Spence said.

"The Police's own figures show crime has fallen in the Central Police Region in recent years and are a result of police and the community working together to help prevent, report and solve crime." Ms Spence said.

"Some of the most positive results from last year's Police Statistical Review included a 33 per cent reduction in the overall rate of rape and attempted rape, a four per cent decrease in assaults, a six per cent fall overall in unlawful entry and a nine per cent decrease in unlawful entry with intent into dwellings.

Ms Spence said, "There were 106 more liquor offences in 2005-06 compared with 2004-05, a rise of 16 per cent when allowing for population growth. This can be attributed to more police proactively targeting liquor offences, particularly around licensed premises, and more police in general."

Ms Spence said the public are far too smart to be duped by increasingly desperate Liberal Party Candidates who are trying to avoid any discussion about the Howard Government.

"It is interesting that every time an election comes around, Liberal and National Party candidates talk about policing without knowing the facts, or even speaking with police." Ms Spence said.

"Gary Hardgrave, the Liberal Candidate for Moreton is another serial offender when it comes to putting ill-informed views on policing forward." Ms Spence said.

"I want to know why the Federal Liberal candidate for Capricornia is not talking about his own responsibilities and the Howard Government's failure to adequately fund Roads the failure of the Liberals causing inadequate mobile phone coverage in Capricornia and why is he not talking about broadband and other issues important to the people of Capricornia?" Ms Spence said.

"The people of Capricornia want answers from Mr Kilpatrick about why he and the Howard Government have neglected them." Ms Spence said.

“The Liberals and Nationals know their ship is sinking fast if they try and defend their own issues, so instead they use the most predictable trick in the book, and that is talk about State issues to try in vain to deflect attention from themselves and the Howard Government.”
