The Honourable John Mickel

A new Skilling Queenslanders for Work project will give Ipswich and surrounds a skilled labour boost ready to meet demand driven by two recent shopping centre openings.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Bundamba Jo-Ann Miller said $129,590 had been granted to Bremer TAFE to give 80 unemployed or underemployed jobseekers retail skills.

“Programs like this under our Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping to give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.

“Strong economic times also bring skills shortages which skilling projects like this can help alleviate,” Mr Mickel said.

Ms Miller said the new Orion Centre in Springfield and Riverlink Centre in Ipswich are experiencing a critical shortage of skilled workers as both retail centres have created up to 1,000 new jobs for the region.

“The Bremer Institute of TAFE is working directly with local employers to give participants the skills they need to find work and keep it,” she said.

“The training will culminate in a week-long vocational placement to introduce participants to local employers and give them real-world experience.”

The Bremer Institute of TAFE Program Delivery Manager Yvonne Williams said participants would do four weeks of formal training and graduate with six competencies from the Retail Training Package.

“Throughout the project, we will work with participants to determine the best retail venue for them and guide them through the interview and recruitment process,” Ms Williams said.

“The training is being provided through a $137,776 direct grant from Bremer TAFE.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
