The local disability community will come together in Ipswich today (October 23 2007) to share their views about creating a better future for people with a disability.

Communities and Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the meeting was the final in a series of 11 Shared Visions regional forums held across the State.

“About 100 service providers, government representatives and stakeholders from all areas of the disability community – including people with a disability, their families and carers – are attending today’s forum to have their say,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“More than 1,100 people to date from across the State have taken part in these meetings and shared their ideas about how we can work together to improve opportunities and services for people with a disability,” she said.

“This input is invaluable and I want to thank every one for their ideas and for sharing their views and experiences.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said this was the first year regional forums have been held which has enabled more people in more places to have a say. The forums follow on from Shared Visions State conferences held on the Gold Coast in 2005 and 2006.

Ms Nelson-Carr also thanked today’s speakers who have showcased a range of initiatives, from personal empowerment and community awareness to post-school transitioning programs.

“We want to identify strengths and opportunities for the local disability community, and build a better future for people with a disability,” said the Minister.

A summary from each regional forum will be posted on the Shared Visions website located at www.disability.qld.gov.au

Following today’s meeting, a report on the discussions and outcomes will be published to help fine-tune the focus of the next State conference planned for 2008.

“The visions that we share today will help us all shape better communities for tomorrow,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
