Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Communities and Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr has tonight praised award-winning journalists and their outlets for challenging myths about older Queenslanders.
“Well done to the winners of the 2007 Older People Speak Out Media Awards because their reporting of older people brings dignity, respect and truth to our communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“These annual awards recognise good work being done by the media and they also encourage more professionals in the industry to explore and expand positive portrayals of older, active Queenslanders,” she said.
“The Department of Communities is working hard to dispel the myths and focus on the facts about ageing, and this awards program is a critical part of that campaign.
“I congratulate all the winners for helping to break down barriers and building more positive images of older people.”
The Department of Communities has been a proud sponsor of the awards since 1993, last year committing $30,000 in funding over three years to ensure the continued success of the event which was tonight held at the State Library, South Bank.
