Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence has commended race-goers for making this year’s Lexmark Indy 300 such a great event.

Ms Spence said the spectators who flocked to the Gold Coast for the four-day motor-racing spectacular were well behaved and contributed to the success of the whole event.

“The atmosphere at this year’s Indy was excellent – with the majority of people out to enjoy the excitement on and off the track,” Ms Spence said.

“Of the 314,900 people who attended this year’s Indy, very few caused trouble for police and other spectators, and it was pleasing to see only a relatively small number of incidents within the race precinct, throughout the four days of Indy.

“Indy is a family event, and it is great to see that most people enjoyed themselves with this in mind.”

Assistant Commissioner David Melville said that only 38 people were arrested in and around the Indy precinct during the actual event. These arrests included public nuisance and drunk and disorderly offences.

“Incident levels during the event were relatively low considering the number of people in and around the Indy precinct,” Mr Melville said.

“Overall, balcony behaviour has been quite good, with only a few isolated incidents of people throwing items onto paths and roads.

“I would like to thank the public for their assistance and cooperation over the course of the past four days and commend the police for the professional way they undertook this operation – we are all looking forward to Indy 2008,” Mr Melville said.

“Policing operations conducted overnight and into the early hours of the morning over the four days, and focused on the Surfers Paradise central business district, did result in 262 people being arrested on 285 charges, with the majority of arrests for public order related incidents. Last year there were 228 people arrested during Indy.

Ms Spence said the clean up after Indy has now begun, with huge amounts of trackside infrastructure to be disassembled over the coming days.

“Residents on the Gold Coast have been extremely co-operative through out the entire set-up and running of Indy,” Ms Spence said.

“We appreciate their ongoing patience while the infrastructure is moved out, and their streets are returned to normal.

“Indy couldn’t have been the success it was this year, without the support of Gold Coast residents, and I thank them for continuing to embrace this major event.”
