Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

The new MacIntosh Island Park Bridge is getting a work out during the four days of Indy, Sport Minister Judy Spence said today.

Ms Spence said the $4.6 Million pedestrian link is a huge boost for community recreation in the area, providing residents and visitors with greater access to recreation facilities on MacIntosh Island.

“This new bridge forms an important pedestrian link from MacIntosh Island to Narrow Neck Beach,” Ms Spence said.

“The previous bridge over the Nerang River was deteriorating rapidly, and was fast becoming unsafe for pedestrians.

“This government has been pleased to partner with the Council to deliver this important infrastructure for the Gold Coast community.

“We injected $2.3 million in funding towards the construction of Bridge, with Gold Coast City Council matching our contribution.

“I’m delighted this project has been delivered on time and on budget, improving recreation opportunities for Gold Coast residents, and just in time for the Lexmark Indy 300.”

Ms Spence said the bridge is helping to manage the huge crowds pouring into the area for the four day event.

“As a dedicated pedestrian only link, the bridge is assisting in crowd flow, with more than 300,000 race-goers expected in the Indy precinct over the four days,” Ms Spence said.

“The new approaches to the bridge enable greater access to all users, including people with a disability and mothers with prams.

“In the long term, this bridge is going to allow more residents and visitors on the Gold Coast to get outdoors and be active on MacIntosh Island.”

Ms Spence said the bridge had been designed with the environment and public safety in mind.

“Trees that were removed during construction are being cared for off-site and will be returned after the completion of the Indy to best insure their care and safety,” Ms Spence said.

“The bridge masts will also be illuminated at night to improve public safety and make it even more accessible.

“The Queensland Government is committed to helping local councils and community organisations improve and enhance opportunities for sport and active recreation, and we are proud to have been a part of this excellent project.”
