Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence has praised race-goers for their good behaviour and cooperation during the first two days of Indy.

Ms Spence said both residents and visitors on the Gold Coast have been acting responsibly, making the job of our police officers easier.

“The atmosphere at Indy so far has been fantastic, with most people just out to have a good time,” Ms Spence said.

“Police have a big job on their hands during Indy, with thousands of people all packed into the precinct.

“But so far this year there has been no serious incident and the majority of spectators have been enjoying the festivities responsibly.”

Ms Spence urged race-goers to maintain their good behaviour over the weekend, to ensure this year’s Indy is the best ever.

“With police out in force, anyone who attempts to drink and drive will get caught,” Ms Spence said.

“People should drink in moderation, and consider how their actions may affect others.

“Indy is a family event and we want everyone to have a good time.”

Assistant Commissioner David Melville said he was very pleased with the behaviour of those enjoying the start of Indy.

“Overnight there were 67 arrests on 73 charges in total within Surfers Paradise and of these 18 were for being drunk and 42 for public nuisance,” Mr Melville said.

Indy Security was required to evict only nine people throughout the course of the entire day. The evictions were generally for disorderly behaviour with no violence.

“This is a family event and people are urged to think about how their actions will affect other people’s enjoyment of the event.

“People should drink in moderation. Excessive drinking not only puts yourself in danger by affecting your judgment, but can also lead to actions that are inappropriate at this type of family event, Mr Melville said.

“Crowds at last nights’ events, including the Surfers Paradise Parade, were relatively well behaved.

“Overall, this is a fairly good start to the weekend. We want people to have fun and enjoy Indy. To help keep the event safe people should plan ahead and drink in moderation,” Mr Melville said.
